SMS Fraud Alert
We have been alerted to a fraudulent SMS message that has been received by multiple members across a number of credit unions. The message falsely purports to be issued by the member’s credit union.
Please see a sample of the SMS message for your awareness.

Scam Message Details
The text message states:
“Credit union: A new payee Peter Brady IE********26818 AIBKIE2DXXX was created online. Please contact us on (01) 578 5614 if you did not create this payee.”
The message is designed to:
- Create urgency by referencing the creation of a new payee.
- Provide a Dublin-based phone number for the member to call.
- Prompt the member to make immediate contact with the fraudster.
Key Red Flags
- Reference to a newly created payee to trigger concern or panic.
- A contact number that is not the official credit union number.
- Encouragement to call the number provided in the SMS.
- A generic sender ID (“Credit union”) rather than the specific credit union name.
How the Scam Operates
If a member calls the number provided, they are likely speaking directly with a fraudster who may attempt to:
- Obtain online banking login credentials.
- Request part or all of the member’s PIN.
- Request One-Time Passcodes (OTPs).
- Direct the member through urgent “security steps” designed to facilitate account takeover.
This is a classic smishing (SMS phishing) attempt.
What TUI Credit Union Will Never Ask You
This message is worth repeating, as it applies to all types of scams, not just recent payee or SMS‑based fraud attempts.
TUI Credit Union Will Never:
- Ask you for your full PIN
- Ask for your online banking password
- Ask you to share a One‑Time Passcode (OTP) by phone, text, or email
- Send a text message asking you to call an unfamiliar number to resolve an account issue
If anyone contacts you claiming to be from TUI Credit Union and requests any of the above information, it is a scam.
End the conversation immediately and contact us using our official contact details.
Why These Scams Keep Changing
Text message (or “smishing”) scams are not new, but they are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
Fraudsters are aware that many people are cautious about clicking links in text messages. As a result, they have adapted their tactics. Instead of directing you to a link, some scams now encourage you to make a phone call, creating a false sense of urgency and legitimacy.
Similar scam patterns have been reported across the credit union sector in recent months — from fake password reset messages to phishing emails. These threats are constantly evolving, which is why staying informed is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself.
